what do you think about giving kids money for things like chores and grades?

My son thinks he ought to be paid for doing chores around the house. (he’s 11, almost 12)I tell him no because as a family we are all expected to do our part in helping the household run smoothly. He is only responsible for two things, the garbage, and keeping his room clean. His room is hardly ever clean and I have to constantly remind him about the garbage. If I paid him to do these things do you think they would get done more, or should I stand by my priniciples and expect him to do some things just to help out of the goodness of his heart, and being a part of the family. He gets extra money in other ways. Yesterday he got $40 to spend when we went to the mall, but it was because I had a little extra money, not because of any chores he had done or anything. What do you all think?
