What’s involved in becoming a Financial Planner?
I think I really missed my calling in life. Over the last several years, I have picked up quite a bit of knowledge of how to manage my own investments and plan for retirement, and I find it all incredibly interesting.
So how does one go about becoming a financial planner? I don’t really want to manage people’s money so much as help them develop a good plan based on their circumstances and goals, and maybe recommend some good investments for them to achieve those goals.
Does one have to take certain courses? Do you have to do a lot of cold calling to get clients? Any background info or good web sites would be great!
Can I volunteer to be a financial planner in IL?
Are there such things as volenteer financial planners in IL, if so how does one become certified to be one. Is there a programs sponserd by the state?

Should a good financial planner know CAPM?
I have asked every financial planner in town if they know the Beta on the New York Stock Exchange or S&P 500, and none of them have known the answer–which means that they don’t understand the Capital Asset Pricing Model. I thought it would be reasonable to expect financial planners to know CAPM and ECMH. Is it? Are the financial planners in my area just stupid, or are they par for the course? And if they aren’t expected to know CAPM, why should I entrust my money to them?

Finding a good first financial planner / advisor in Los Angeles?
I’m not a huge investor, but have realized that I just don’t have the time to effectively handle my own financial planning. As such, how do I go about finding a good financial advisor/planner in Los Angeles?

When You Cant Afford A Financial Planner
Ive read with interest your comments about fee based financial advisors. However, you have yet to address the issue that fee based relationships work only if your nest egg is $1000000 +. Those of us smaller hitters are overlooked by financial advisors who are compelled to work exclusively with accounts that will generate sufficient return on their time invested. I guess that is just a harsh reality of life.
